How Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Works

Conditions That Can Benefit from Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

  • Aging:  Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) has shown promise in mitigating some effects of aging. Studies suggest HBOT can increase telomere length, reduce senescent cells, and improve cellular and tissue function, potentially impacting aspects of aging like skin health, cognitive function, and physical performance.
  • Anxiety and DEPRESSION:  Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is being explored as a potential treatment for anxiety and depression, showing promising results in some studies. Increased oxygen levels in the brain may improve energy, reduce inflammation, and enhance cellular repair, potentially supporting emotional resilience and overall mental well-being.
  • Attention problems:  Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) may improve attention problems by enhancing oxygen delivery to the brain and promoting neuroplasticity, potentially benefiting conditions like ADD/ADHD and cognitive decline. While research is ongoing, some studies suggest HBOT can improve focus, reduce hyperactivity, and enhance cognitive functions in individuals with attention difficulties.
  • Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)  Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is a treatment that involves breathing pure oxygen in a pressurized environment, typically in a hyperbaric chamber. It's being explored as a potential therapy for autism spectrum disorder (ASD) due to its ability to reduce inflammation and improve oxygen delivery to the brain. While not FDA-approved for autism, some studies suggest potential benefits in improving symptoms like social deficits, repetitive behaviors, and language difficulties.
  • Autoimmune diseases:  Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) can be a powerful tool for treating autoimmune diseases. HBOT is a clinical treatment where the patient breathes concentrated oxygen while enclosed in a hyperbaric oxygen chamber at a pressure greater than atmospheric.
  • Lyme disease:  Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is gaining recognition as a potential adjunct therapy for Lyme disease, particularly for individuals experiencing persistent symptoms after standard antibiotic treatment.
  • Memory problems and Alzheimer’s disease:  Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) shows promise as a potential treatment for Alzheimer's disease and other memory problems by improving cerebral blood flow and oxygen delivery to the brain. Studies suggest that HBOT can reduce amyloid plaques, increase brain metabolism, and improve cognitive function in both animal models and humans with dementia.
  • Migraine:  HBOT may help manage migraines by improving oxygen delivery to the brain, reducing inflammation, and supporting overall neurological function.
  •  PTSD: Some studies ( Doenyas-Barak K, Catalogna M, Kutz I, Levi G, Hadanny A, Tal S, Daphna-Tekoha S, Sasson E, Shechter Y, Efrati S.PLoS One. 2022 Feb 22;17(2):e0264161. doi: 10.1371/journal.pone.0264161. eCollection 2022.PMID: 35192645 ) show that the cumulative data indicate that new protocols of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) may induce neuroplasticity and improve clinical symptoms of patients suffering from posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The aim of the current study was to evaluate the effects of HBOT on veterans with combat-associated PTSD (CA-PTSD) in a randomized, sham-controlled trial.
  • Stroke:  Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is showing promise as a complementary treatment for stroke recovery by enhancing oxygen delivery to damaged brain tissue and promoting neuroplasticity. HBOT involves breathing 100% oxygen in a pressurized chamber, which increases oxygen levels in the blood and tissues, potentially reducing cerebral edema, inhibiting inflammation, and promoting neuronal survival. While research is ongoing, HBOT has demonstrated potential benefits in both acute and chronic stroke, including improved cognitive function, motor skills, and overall quality of life.
  • Traumatic brain injuries (TBI) and concussions:  Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is a treatment that involves breathing pure oxygen in a pressurized environment. It has shown promise in improving outcomes for individuals with traumatic brain injury (TBI), both in the acute and chronic phases. HBOT can potentially reduce mortality in severe acute TBI cases and promote healing and repair in chronic TBI by increasing oxygen delivery to damaged brain tissue.
  • Vascular dementia:  Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is being explored as a potential treatment for vascular dementia, with some studies showing promising results in improving cognitive function and potentially slowing the progression of the disease. HBOT involves breathing pure oxygen in a pressurized chamber, which can increase oxygen levels in the brain and potentially promote tissue repair and new blood vessel formation.
